Biomass Combustion for Energy Saving

Combustion equipment for solid biomass: grate types, suitable fuels and a reference project.

Biomass Energy

What is biomass energy?

Biomass energy comes from organic matter such as energy crops and agricultural residues, converted by thermal, chemical or biological processes. It is a renewable energy source.

  • Solid: refuse, refuse-derived fuel (RDF), agricultural residues, wood
  • Liquid: bio-oil, biodiesel, bioethanol
  • Gaseous: syngas, biogas

Based on TMM's technical presentation of June 2016 by General Manager Cheng Ming Chen.

CO₂ Comparison

CO₂ generation by fuel

Calculated for a boiler producing 25,000 kg/h of steam. Wood has high moisture (34%) and a low heating value, so more fuel is needed for the same steam output.

Combustion patterns

Forward travelling grate combustion
Forward travelling grateFor boilers up to 20 t/h. Zones: drying/pyrolysis, oxidation, reduction and ash. Fuel size of 25 mm or more is preferred.
Spreader stoker combustion
Spreader stokerFor large boilers. The grate is covered by an ash layer; fine particles burn in suspension.
