Steam Soil Sterilization

Disinfect soil and growing media with steam instead of chemicals. Fewer diseases and weeds; plant the next day.

Why Steam

Why switch to steam

Soil-borne diseases and nematodes build up under continuous cropping, and chemicals control them poorly while leaving residues. Methyl bromide, the common fumigant, depletes the ozone layer and is being phased out under the Montreal Protocol.

Steam kills pathogens, soil pests and weed seeds without residues. At 60–80 °C, heat-tolerant beneficial microbes survive, so the soil is not left biologically empty.

Savings

What you save

  • Less chemicals: fewer or no fungicides, insecticides and herbicides.
  • Two crops per treatment: in lily trials, one treatment protected two consecutive crops.
  • Reuse growing media: disinfect and reuse instead of replacing.
  • Lower crop losses: disease incidence drops sharply; 80 °C gave better lily quality and vase life.
  • Less waiting: plant the day after treatment.
